Abstract

816,058. Fork lift trucks. FITCH, C. K. May 1, 1957 [Feb. 28, 1956], No. 6208/56. Class 78 (3). The tines 20 of a fork lift truck are retractably mounted in the lifting carriage 10. The invention is described in connection with the truck for lifting motor cars described in Specification 783,452, in which the tines are individually adjustable laterally by pairs of rams 11, 13. The retracting mechanism comprises a telescopic shaft 34, 36 driven by an electric motor and worm gearing 37, 38, worms 33 each meshing with a worm wheel 32, which rotates a pinion 28 (Fig. 2) engaging a rack 27 on the side of the associated tine 20. Sets of rollers 23, 24 guide the tines in their movement, and plates 31 protect the gearing from damage. In a modification (not shown) the tines are each driven individually by a separate electric motor,
