Abstract

816,020. Induction motors with brakes. GLOBE ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Dec. 17, 1957 [Feb. 13, 1957], No. 4870/57. Class 35. An electric motor has a conically tapering rotor 20 which can move axially along the motor shaft 16, and carries the movable portion of a brake. The brake may be applied, for example by an axial compression spring 24 which may be adjusted by a nut 26 on the motor shaft. The spring loading is overcome by tapering the rotor 20 and stator 22 from end to end and positioning the stator so that, on switching on, the stator field moves the rotor axially against the spring, thus releasing the brake. The rotor may have an inner sleeve 18 of phosphor bronze which is splined to the motor shaft. The movable portion of the brake may be formed on a fan 32 attached to the rotor and the fixed portion may be friction pads 38 secured to the end cover 36 of the motor.
