Abstract

815,928. Quenching. UNITED STEEL CO'S Ltd. Sept. 3, 1957 [Sept. 5, 1956], No 27208/56. Class 72 [Also in Group XXII] Metal strip or plate after leaving the final pass of a rolling mill is received on a roller rack and cooled by a series of jets having laminar flow to eliminate splash. Metal boxes 3 contain sets of twenty siphon tubes 1 to direct water over the whole width of the strip or plate. Each box has a low pressure water inlet trough 9 near the bottom of the box, the inlet being shielded by a perforated baffle plate 6. The length of the delivery leg of each siphon is at least twelve times its diameter. The boxes 3 are spaced longitudinally of the strip and the intervening gaps are closed by flanges on the bottom plates, each flange facing the approaching strip being upwardly inclined to deflect the strip downward. The boxes may be pivoted about a shaft 11 and water is supplied to an open tundish 10 to flow along the trough 9 to the siphon tubes.
