Abstract

815,596. Wire fabrics ; filters. CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE RESEARCH FOUNDATION. Nov. 11, 1955, No. 32359/55. Classes 45 and 46. [Also in Groups XII, XXII and XXVI] A wire fabric which may subsequently be used to form the porous wall of a filter, turbine blade or rocket combustion chamber is formed of layers of parallel wires 1, Fig. 1, with the wires of adjacent layers crossing tc provide pores 3. The wires are of steel, copper, titanium, molybdenum or of copper-plated steel and are wound initially on a mandrel and sintered together at their crossing points. The mandrel is then removed. The porosity may be predetermined and may vary through the wall thickness, Fig. 6, and the pores 3 may run substantially normal to the wall surface or be inclined thereto or they may form labyrinth channels. The wound structure may be of cylindrical or conical hollow form or a cylindrical structure may be cut longitudinally and pressed into a flat sheet.
