Abstract

815,583. Cold rolling. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. June 29, 1955 [April 2, 1954], No. 9733/54. Class 83 (4). A rolling mill for light tempering of steel strip with a reduction of the order of 1 per cent or less comprises a pair of rolls 14, 16, Fig. 1, with diameters of approximately two to four inches. One roll .16 is supported in a housing 19 which can be deformed by screwdowns 21 to give uniform reduction across the width of the strip. The roll 16 is supported by bearing pads 18 in the housing 19 which is carried by the screw-downs 21 in a crosshead 20 on pillars 22. The lower roll housing 13 is adjustable in the base 12 by wedges 15. Both housings may be supplied with coolant. To obtain a constant reduction ratio the pillars 22 are constructed to give the mill a predetermined stiffness to suit the material being rolled and may be replaced by a hydraulic mechanism adjustable to varying stiffnesses. The rolls are driven at each end from the internal gear of a gear ring 28, Fig. 3, through spur gears 26, 27 of smaller diameter than the roll faces. The ring 28 engages the gear 26 directly and drives the gear 27 through an idler gear 29 attached to the housing 19 and arranged to remain in mesh when the rolls are moved apart. In a modification, bearing pads 17 are replaced by needle rollers 25, Fig. 4, which may be shorter than the rolls and arranged in staggered relationship along the length of the rolls.
