815,170. Securing lids to fruit and like cases. N. Z. INVENTIONS DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. Jan. 19, 1957, No. 2041/57. Class 94(1). A machine for nailing lids to fruit and like cases comprises a main frame A, A<SP>1</SP> with cross bars B, B<SP>1</SP> supporting nailing guns C, C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP>, C<SP>3</SP> and a work table D on which is movably mounted a case-supporting frame 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, 11, 11<SP>1</SP> fitted with an adjustable tray 12 formed with a central depression 12A for the reception of the bulged bottom of a case. The frame also includes uprights 15, 15<SP>1</SP> carrying adjustable extension members 19, 19<SP>1</SP> formed with right-angled slots 19A, 19<SP>1</SP>A for the reception of pins 24, 241 on plates 23, 23<SP>1</SP> which carry an adjustable lidclamping bar 26 and an operating handle 27. The members 19, 19<SP>1</SP> support case-locating members 20, 201 and 21, 21<SP>1</SP>. The plates 23, 23<SP>1</SP> are coupled by links 32, 32<SP>1</SP> to the members 19, 19<SP>1</SP> and by adjustable links 36, 37 and 36<SP>1</SP>, 37<SP>1</SP> to the main frame A, A<SP>1</SP>. A spring 29 is connected between a pin 30 on the plate 23 and the lower end of the link 32. After a case has been positioned against the members 20, 20<SP>1</SP> and 21, 21<SP>1</SP> the operator pulls down the handle 27 to cause the bar 26 to apply a progressively increasing pressure to the slats F<SP>1</SP> of the ease lid. This operation also causes the pins 24, 24<SP>1</SP> to cooperate with the slots 19A, 19<SP>1</SP>A to move the case-supporting frame inwardly until the end cleat F<SP>2</SP> of the lid is below the nailing guns. The linkage passes through a dead-centre position during this movement so that the spring 29 holds the handle in the raised or lowered position.
