Abstract

269,420. Hughes, R. M., (Markem Machine Co.). Nov. 1, 1926. Platen machines; holders for loose types; inking-apparatus.-The platen or printing-head of a press has a detachable type chase which is provided with a number of slotted type-supporting bars into which individual type can be inserted from above, the type-supporting bars being adjustable toward and from each other, and adjustable word gauges are provided on the bars to facilitate the positioning of types constituting individual words. The chase 29, Figs. 4 and 10, is provided with a lipped rear edge 38 engaging notches in arms 37 on the forked lower end 2 of a pivoted arm 6, Fig. 1, and removable clamping members 40 co-operate with the front edge to hold the chase in position. A top or backing-plate 4 pivotally mounted on a bar 42 supported by the. arms 37 is adapted in its closed position to bear upon the upper ends 35 of the types 5 in the chase, a latch 43 being provided to hold it closed. The chase comprises a skeleton frame with end members 49 formed with flanges 50 which extend from front to rear and are slotted to receive ribs 52 on the underside of blocks 48 at each end of the type-carrying bars 31. A screw 53 through each end of a bar 31 engages a ribbed clamping piece 54 on the underside of the flange 50 to hold the bar in a set position. The portions of the type-carrying bars intermediate the ends consist of spaced strips 47 which engage shoulders upon the types inserted between them. The word gauges comprise co-operating upper and lower blocks 56, 59 which are slotted to fit over the edges of the strips 47 and are clamped in a set position by screws 58. By placing the chase above a printed label &c. the latter may be used as a templet and types corresponding to a particular word on the label can be set by adjusting the bars 31 and positioning two word gauges so that their inner faces are above the beginning and the end of the word on the label. The arm 6, Fig. 1, carrying the type chase 29 is pivoted at its upper end to a lever which 8 is pivoted at 9 to the machine frame 3, a rear extension on the lever 8 being connected to the frame by a spring 10 which normally holds the front end of the lever elevated. Vertical movement of the arm 6 is controlled by a toggle comprising levers 11, 12 respectively pivoted at 14, 15 to the frame 3 and arm 6, and connected together by a pivot 13. A spring 16 connected between the pivots 9 and 13 normally holds the levers 11, 12 elevated in which position the lower ends of the arm 6 is inclined inwardly so that the faces of the types are in contact with an inking-pad 2 on a lever 23 pivoted to an extension 25 of the frame. A pivoted link 26 is connected between the end of the lever 23 and the bottom of the arm 6. When the toggle is straightened by depressing a treadle connected by a rod 17 to the arm 11 the initial movement of the arm 6 lifts the types in a direction at right angles to the face of the inking- pad, whereupon the arm swings into a vertical position before moving downwardly upon the work support 1. To prevent the toggle levers 11, 12 from turning below their straightened position by a lug 18 on the lever 12 co-operates with a screw 19 in a lug 20 on the lever 11.
