Abstract
<PICT:0815157/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0815157/IV (a)/2> In the production of artificial threads by the extrusion of a spinning solution through a jet, variations in denier are imparted to the threads by exerting upon the freshly spun threads a varying drawing action by means of a godet whose section in a plane perpendicular to its axis of rotation is rectangular with a length-breadth ratio of at least 4 to 1 and which rotates about an axis passing through the godet. As shown in Fig. 1, a thread 1 formed by extruding viscose from a jet 2 into a coagulating bath 3 is withdrawn from the bath by a circular godet 4 and passes upwards around a guide 5 to a godet 6 whose section in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the godet is rectangular, having a length-breadth ratio of 4 to 1. The godet 6 is symmetrically and fixedly mounted on the shaft 7. The thread 1 passes around the godet 6 and is taken again around the guide 5 and the godet 6 before passing over a guide 8 to a funnel 9 of a centrifugal box (not shown). The length of the godet 6 is 7 inches and the guide 5 is situated about 4 to 4 1/2 inches from its axis of rotation. The rotational speeds of the godets are such that the maximum spinning speed is not greater than 70 metres/minute and such that the maximum ratio of drawing speed to extrusion speed does not reach the critical value, generally 3 to 1, when the thread is liable to break at the jet. As shown in Fig. 2, the arrangement of the godets is reversed, the first godet 10 being rectangular while the second godet 11 is circular. Alternatively, both godets may be rectangular. Instead of the axes of rotation of the godets passing through the centre of gravity of their cross-section, the axes may pass through some other point in their cross-section.
