In apparatus for applying screw closures C to containers B, rotatable chucks 23 each have a flexible sleeve 45 expanded inwards to grip the closure by compressed air and withdrawn therefrom by a vacuum after closuring. As shown, the containers are fed from and to a conveyer 16 and to and from a rotatable closuring machine 15 by star wheels 18, 27 and the closures are fed by pins 21 on a rotating plate 19 on to a stationary shelf 22 at the entry end of the machine 15. The chuck 23, carried on a stem 39, is lowered by a cam 54 and follower 55 at this point to pick up the closure and sleeve 45 is made to grip it by compressed air fed through pipe 76, Fig. 1, groove 77 in a fixed ring 69, duct 68 in rotating ring 64, Fig. 3, hose 65, a bore in a chuck stem 40 and ducts 52, 44 in the chuck itself. The chuck is then lowered on to the container and rotated by air motor 59 which drives stem 40 through gears 61. Air for the motor is supplied through pipes 78 to groove 79 in ring 69, duct 63 in ring 64, and hose 62. The screwing up pressure is varied by altering the air pressure to pipes 78 and hence the stalling point of motor 59. After closuring, vacuum is applied to the sleeve 45 from pipe 81 and groove 80 in ring 69 to withdraw it from the closure and the chuck is lifted again by the cam 54. During its progress through machine 15, the container is maintained in an atmosphere of steam supplied from distributers 29.
