Abstract

814,573. Photographic plates. GENERAL ANILINE & FILM CORPORATION. April 18, 1957 [April 20, 1956], No. 12775/57. Class 98(2) A paper base is coated with a gelatino silver halide emulsion and overcoated with a thin layer of gelatin having dispersed therethrough beeswax and an anionic or a non-ionic surface active agent, to result in a material of improved ferrotyping characteristics. The overcoat may contain also a silver halide stabilizer. In Example 1 mono-diethylaminoethyldodecenyl succinate as the preferred surface active agent, the sodium salt of benzene sulphinic acid together with diphenyl sulphide as silver halide stabilizer and chrome alum solution are added to a warm gelatin solution and an aqueous beeswax emulsion prepared with triethanolamine is added also, the product is coated over a wet chilled gelatino silver halide layer on a paper support and dried; exposure, processing, washing and simultaneous drying and ferrotyping on a cold polished metal surface emulsion side down shows better resistance to surface defects than a similar paper with a protective layer comprising gelatine, chrome alum, the stabilizer and saponin. Example II indicates merely that the materials of Example I is hot-ferrotyped. Anionic agents exemplified in addition to that mentioned above are sodium-tetradecyl sulphate, -octyl phosphate, -butyl naphthalene sulphate and -keryl benzene sulphate; and non-ionic agents are the condensation products of 2.6.8-trimethyl nonanol - 4 with 12 mols of ethylene oxide, of diamyl phenol with 20 mols of ethylene oxide and of long chain fatty acids with proteins. Specifications 380,431 [Group VIII] and 690,143 are referred to.
