Abstract

814,277. Vehicle power steering. ALLISCHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 14, 1957 [Oct. 18, 1956], No. 32077/57. Class 79(5) [Also in Group XXXII] A power steering mechanism for a tractor comprises a member 63 rotatably coupled to the steering column 15 with provision at 64 for relative axial movement. The member 63 has a helical groove 68 which is adapted to engage a roller 66 carried by a shaft 67 which transmits the steering movement to the steering gear (not shown) of the vehicle. The member 63 also has an annular groove 74 which engages the operating member 72 of a valve 73 which controls the supply of fluid from a pump (not shown) to a fluid motor 69 adapted to drive the shaft 67. In operation, rotation of the steering column 15 results in axial movement of the member 63 due to interaction between the roller 66 and the groove 68. This produces movement of the member 72 and consequent actuation of the valves to bring about actuation of the motor 69. The steering gear embodies means for adjusting the track of the road wheels (see Group XXXII). Specification 608,511 is referred to.
