Abstract

A vehicle has back wheels 6,9 attached to parallel bars 1, which are held beneath a fixed plate 3 by a bracket 2. The bars may be extended by hand or by a mechanism, and are held in place in either position by locking pins 13B fitting into holes 13,13A in the plate 3 and the bars 1. The wheel 6 is connected to a driving mechanism 11 by a sliding shaft 8. The arrangement combines the stability of a three wheeled vehicle with the manoeuvrability and ease of parking of a two wheeled vehicle.

Description

EXTENDABLE BACK WHEELS FOR A THREE WHEELED This relates to a back two wheel unit on a three wheeled vehicle which can be narrowed to manouver through narrow spaces or parking in confined spaces or widened to provide stability at greater speeds on the open road.
The invention consists of two parallel bars 1. held beneath a fixed plate 3. by a bracket 2.
These are able to be pulled outwards or pushed inwards by hand or any other appropriate mechanism, after the back wheels are lifted off the ground by the sort of stand usually found on motor scooters.
At the end of the bars, on each side, are shoes 4. and 5. holding the wheels 6. and 9. On top of the plate 3. is the driving mechanism, say drive wheel or motor 11. and the frame of the vehicle 12.
A sliding drive shaft 8. slides through a hollow drive wheel 11. or a hollow drive shaft (not shown), slides over the motor spindle is fixed to one of the wheels 6.
This drive shaft 8. drives one of the wheels 6. and this sliding drive shaft moves inwards or outwards as the wheels are narrowed or extended.
If a mechanism is not used to extend the wheelbase and it is extended by hand then the bars are held in place by locking holes 13., 13A. and two locking pins 13B.
This combines the stability and safety features of a three wheeled vehicle with the manouverability and ease of parking of a two wheeled vehicle.
It will also allow the possibility of providing the vehicle with an outer body for safety and weather protection.
