Abstract

Hydrogels containing a cross-linked copolymer are made by copolymerizing an acrylic or methacrylic monoester of a glycol or polyglycol with an acrylic or methacrylic diester of a glycol or polyglycol in an aqueous medium, the water content of which does not substantially change during copolymerization, the weight ratio of the monoester to diester ranging from 50 : 1 to 500 : 1. Glycols and polyglycols specified are ethylene, triethylene, propylene, polyethylene, polypropylene and mixed polyethylene-polypropylene glycols. If desired, the monomer mixture may also contain an alkyl methacrylate, e.g. methyl methacrylate. Copolymerization may be accelerated by catalysts such as potassium persulphate or an ammonium persulphate/sodium bisulphite mixture. During copolymerization there may be immersed in the reaction mixture fibres or sheets of a material, e.g. glass or a polyester, which is removed at the completion of copolymerization to yield a channelled product which may be used in dialysis operations or as an artificial kidney. The hydrogels may also be used in the manufacture of contact lenses, surgical fillings or partitions and pessaries.
