Abstract
Polymerized olefins, e.g. polyethylene, prepared with a halogen-containing catalyst formed by admixing an organic compound of aluminium containing two or more alkyl radicals with compounds of the Groups IVa, Va or VIa metals of the Mendeleeff Periodic System and containing catalyst residues including halogen are stabilized against hydrogen halides by incorporating in the polymer a salt compound of a polybasic carboxylic acid radical and a metal from the first two Groups of the Periodic System. Specified stabilizers are disodium sebacate, disodium suberate, disodium adipate, disodium terephthalate, calcium adipate, calcium sebacate, disodium tartarate, sodium citrate and zinc adipate. The stabilizer may be incorporated into the polyolefin by dry-blending, mixing the ingredients on compounding rollers, or by adding a solution or dispersion of the stabilizer to the polymer and removing the solvent or dispersing agent by evaporation.
