In a method of testing wire ropes for broken strands in which one or more coils surrounding the rope produce a flux in it and a broken strand produces stray flux which is detected by a search coil also surrounding the rope, the current for exciting the field is of at least 100 amperes, thus reducing the number of turns necessary and is supplied by the rectified output of a three-phase transformer. A.C. ripple in the output is eliminated by filters and a pair of search coils side by side and connected in opposition, may balance out the effect of variations such as changes in mains voltage which affect the entire length of rope while a flaw such as a broken strand will produce spaced pulses in the two coils. The coil may be made with a break in its circumference and with a hinge at the end of the diameter of the break to enable it to be put over the rope. A pair of search coils may be slightly staggered circumferentially so as to ensure that the flow is not undetected because of the gap in the coil circumference.
