Abstract

813,446. Electrodeposition of aluminium. ZIEGLER, K. July 22, 1955 [July 28, 1954; June 13, 1955], No. 21284/55. Class 41. Aluminium is electrolytically deposited from a homogeneous liquid phase electrolyte protected against the access of air and comprising (1) a compound of the formula AIR(R<SP>1</SP>) 2 in which R is alkyl and R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl, hydrogen, or halogen together with (2) a complex compound formed by said compound and either (a) a compound MeR<SP>1</SP> where Me is an alkali metal and R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl, hydrogen, or halogen, or (b) a quaternary ammonium halide. The liquid phase may be a homogeneous solution in a solvent such as toluene, methyl naphthalene, tetrahydronaphthalene, diphenyl ether, tetrahydrofurane, dioxane, dimethyl aniline, or pyridine which does not decompose the organic aluminium compound. Access of air to the electrolyte is prevented by the use of either a covering layer of paraffin oil or an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, atmosphere. Electrolysis is effected at bath temperatures of 60‹ to 200‹ C. and adherent deposits may be produced on aluminium or copper, e.g. as wire, cathodes. Decomposition of the aluminium alkyl with anodic evolution of hydrocarbon gases and the need to replace the lost alkyl which occur with anodes of copper, iron, and platinum may be avoided by the use of aluminium anodes. In this way too foundry aluminium may be purified, impurities being retained at the anodes by bagging them.
