Abstract

813,444. Discharge apparatus. GABBRIELLI, E. June 21, 1955, No. 17939/55. Class 39(1). Getters are made by evaporating successively upon a support a first layer of pure active metal and a second layer of a metal such as aluminium copper or nickel which does not chemically react with the first one. By subsequent heating, a stable alloy of the two metals may be formed ; and in a modification the alloy is directly obtained by depositing the two metals simultaneously on the support. The getters may be flat, square, oblong or circular discs with or without correspondingly shaped apertures; or one or two tapes 8, Fig. 6, may be mounted on a stirrup 9. Channel-shaped getters may be made by folding a strip down its centre line and the folded strip may be bent into square, Fig. 9, or circular forms. Alternatively the metal may be deposited in the already formed channel member 14, Fig. 11. The metal vapour may be obtained by a wire 18, Fig. 12, which passes into an oven 19, the vapour escaping through slit 17 to impinge upon strip 16. The successive portions of the wire 18 may carry deposits of the different metals which it is desired to deposit successively.
