Abstract

1,246,109. Soldering. SIEMENS A.G. 20 Nov., 1968 [21 Nov., 1967], No. 54969/68. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H1] In making a mesh grid electrode for an electric discharge device two sets of parallel wires of tungsten, molybdenum or other metal of like high melting point are arranged one above the other so that the wires of the respective sets are at an angle, the wires are soldered together at the intersection points by heating from 830- 1250‹ C. to form a liquid phase from contiguous coatings over the wires, the liquid phase being a eutectic of one or more further metals with boron. The further metals are preferably nickel, cobalt, palladium or platinum. One set of wires may be covered with elementary boron deposited from the gas phase using an inert carrier gas and a liquid compound of boron and hydrogen, the other set with a pure metal and the assembly heated in a inert or reducing atmosphere to above the eutectic temperature. Alternatively both sets of wires may be provided with a coating containing one of the pure metals together with sufficient boron, by chemical reduction and in another alternative one set may have a coating containing one of the pure metals together with sufficient boron and the other set may have a pure metal coating the same as or different from that in the other coating. Nickel- 3-10% boron coatings may be produced in nickel plating baths, the nickel being deposited by means of boranates or borazanes. In examples Ni-B or Co-B by chemical reduction is provided on both sets of wires; B from the gas phase on one set and Ni, Co, Pt or Pd on the other set and Pt on one set and Ni-B or Co-B on the other. A prior art process in which tungsten or molybdenum wires coated with titanium are joined to wires coated with another metal e.g. Cu or Ni is described.
