Abstract

813,246. Steering vehicles. ALFORD & ALDER (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Jan. 31, 1957 [Jan. 31, 1956], No. 3121/56. Class 79(5) A rack member 16 for vehicle steering gear of the rack and pinion type is built up from a solid length of high duty steel which forms the toothed portion 31, and a length of standard tubing forming the plain portion 32, the two portions being united end to end, for example by brazing. The rack teeth are heat hardened after the two portions have been brazed together. The solid portion has a reduced diameter part at one end which fits into the end of the tubular portion. The rack has a housing 11 with a bearing 33 at one end through which the plain portion 32 of the rack slidably extends, and the interior of the tubular portion provides a passage for lubricant through the bearing 33, ports 38, 39 in the wall of the tubular portion affording entry to the lubricant passage. The part of the tubular portion 32. that slides in the bearing 33 is exter- nally machined, e.g. by grinding. Specifications 766,141 [Group XXIV] and 813,245 are referred to.
