Abstract
812,326. Paper-board separators for electric accumulators. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 29, 1957 [Dec. 13, 1956], No. 37296/57. Class 96. Separators 20 for electric batteries are made by passing a strip of permeable paper, e.g. 0.020 to 0.035 inch thick and formed of 90 per cent or more of alpha cellulose fibres through a bath e.g. of an " A "-stage phenol-formaldehyde condensation product diluted with 2 to 4 parts of water, and at room temperature, excess being squeezed out by adjustable pressure rollers, ribs 22 are then formed in the wet paper by embossing rollers, and the paper dried e.g. at 400 to 600 F. for 1 to 5 minutes. The strip is then cut to form individual separators which are stacked, so that they overlap, on a conveyer which takes them through a curing oven at 375 to 500 F. They are then preferably sprayed with a wetting agent, e.g. the trimethylnonyl ether of polyethylene glycol. The separators contain 20 to 35 per cent of cured resin.
