Abstract

731,935. Batteries. AKTIEBOLAGET TUDOR. May 8, 1952 [May 9, 1961No. 11705/52. Class 53. [Also in Group V] A battery separator is manufactured by impregnating a sheet of matted glass fibres with latex, coagulating and subsequently vulcanizing so as to form a microporous structure in the rubber sheet so obtained. Preferably the glass fibres are bound by a binding agent such as starch. The threads may be about 20 microns in thickness and the sheets about 0.5 mms. The glass may occupy about 5 per cent by volume and the rubber component 10-25 per cent by volume. The plates may also contain wood particles or other lignincontaining materials. In an example, glass wool is fed from a drum 4 into a bath 5 of wetting liquid and then between two pressure rollers 6 over pulley 7, through latex bath 8 and into coagulating oven 1. A fabric or paper band 12 after passing through a water bath 13 is interleaved with the treated glass fibre before it is rolled on to drum 10 and the whole vulcanized together.
