Paper pulp, e.g. of ground wood, cotton linters or alkali cellulose, from a flow-box &c. 11 is discharged to a sloping, perforated plate 10 from which it passes to a travelling, foraminous conveyer 12 which passes through wet presses 15 of progressively increasing pressure, the web thus formed being further pressed by a threeroll press 16, 17, 18 or alternatively by two separate wet presses, the pressures at the two nips being hydraulically regulated, e.g. so that the pressure at the second nip is the greater. The rolls 16, 17 are formed as a series of rings which may be plain or peaked and are slightly spaced apart to provide an interrupted smooth or circumferentially peaked surface. The rings may be undercut &c. to facilitate drainage. The upper roll 18 may be plain or slotted. Drainage from the forming and pressing parts of the machine is collected in a partitioned tank 28 and pumped at 30 &c. for re-use. e.g. after purifying by dializers. From the delivery conveyer 19, the web goes to a dryer or to a picker &c.
