Abstract
Artificial threads, fibres, films, foils and like products are produced by spinning viscose in the presence of at least one polyoxyethylene ester of abietic acid and/or hydroabietic acids in an acid spinning bath, the viscose and/or the spinning bath containing respectively 0.2 to 4 per cent by weight, based on the cellulose in the viscose, and 0.005 to 0.5 per cent by weight of the polyoxyethylene ester, and the spinning bath containing at least 2 per cent by weight of a zinc salt, the products formed being stretched. The ester preferably contains between 5 and 300 mols. of ethylene oxide to one mol. of acid, and may be added to the viscose at any stage prior to spinning, preferably during dissolution of the xanthate. The viscose may have a cellulose content of 4-10 per cent and an alkali content of 4-9 per cent, and the amount of carbon bisulphide used in xanthation may be from 25 to 50 per cent (based on oven-dry cellulose). The ratio between the percentage by weight of acid in the spinning bath and that of alkali in the viscose is preferably between 1.3 and 0.8. The spinning bath preferably contains 4-8 per cent of sulphuric acid, 10-25 per cent of sodium sulphate and 2-15 per cent of zinc sulphate, and is preferably maintained at 40-80 DEG C. The products may be passed through a secondary spinning bath, preferably maintained at 50-100 DEG C., containing water, 1-3 per cent of sulphuric acid or the primary bath diluted to about one fourth of its concentration, and may be stretched in the primary bath, in the air between feed wheels, in the secondary bath or in combinations of these. In a description of the properties of the products, reference is made to the determination of the "neutralization point," i.e. the point at which the alkali hydroxide of the viscose is just neutralized by the acid of the spinning bath, by incorporating into the viscose 0.05 per cent (based on the viscose) of bromcresol purple indicator, spinning in a conventional manner and measuring the distance from the spinneret to the point of colour change in the products.
