Abstract

Linear, head to tail propylene polymers are chlorinated and/or sulphochlorinated to a chlorine content of less than 12 per cent. The polymers used may be those described in Specification No. 810,023. Chlorination may be effected at 0 DEG to 30 DEG C. by passing a stream of chlorine through a solution of the polymer in carbon tetrachloride, while sulphochlorination may be effected while using sulphur dioxide chlorine or sulphuryl chloride and a solution of the polymer in carbon tetrachloride, optionally containing pyridine as catalyst. The products have the properties of unvulcanized elastomers and may be vulcanized with materials which fix hydrogen chloride or with lead or magnesium oxide, mercaptobenzthiazole and, if desired, colophony.
