Abstract

811,719. Retreading tyres. NOWAK, B. July 26, 1955 [July 29, 1954], No. 21535/55. Classes 144 (1) and 144 (2). Apparatus for applying inward radial pressure to the tread 5 of a retreaded tyre 10 to effect bonding of the tread to the tyre, comprises a flat spring steel strip which encircles the tread with its ends 12, 13 overlapping, the end 13 having a rack or teeth 14 along each side edge and being received in a guide frame 16 secured to the end 12 of the strip so that the racks 14 are engaged by pinions 18 mounted in the guide frame 16 whereby the strip may be tightened about the tread 5. As shown, the frame 16 has upstanding side flanges 15 between which the strip end 12 is guided and in which a transverse shaft 17 carrying the pinions 18 is journalled. The shaft 17 is rotatable by a handle 19 and carries a ratchet wheel 21 cooperating with a pawl 20 on the frame 16 to lock the rack and pinion in any desired position. The apparatus is used essentially on treads having a flat outer periphery in axial section, such treads having either an arcuate inner surface conforming with an arcuate abraded tread receiving surface of the tyre, or a flat inner surface which is bonded to a tyre which has its beads spread to flatten its tread receiving surface.
