Abstract

810,924. Extrusion dies. MILLER, R. W., MILLER, B. A., and HARKENRIDER, R. J. April 9, 1956, No. 10750/56. Class 87(2). Multiple tube structures with walls of generally polygonal arrangement integrally formed at corners of common walls are extruded from rubber-like, bituminous or other fluent material, according to their purpose, through a die assembly comprising a screen plate 11 having passages 24 for material to be extruded, marginal pieces 18, 19 and a group of cores 14 secured to the screen plate, each core having head and base portions 21, 20, Fig. 12, adjacent head portions of the cores being spaced narrowly to form extrusion die passages 33, Fig. 10, and each core and marginal piece having grooves 22, 28 respectively which mate with corresponding grooves in adjacent cores or marginal pieces to form continuous passages for supplying the extrusion die passages with fluent material from the screen plate passages. The corresponding head and base portions in the marginal pieces are 27, 26 and the material passes from the passages 24 to the grooves 22, 28. through feed grooves 23. In the above embodiment there are thirteen cores of hexagonal form, a multiple hexagonal tube structure so produced having good pressure resistance and recovery properties. The cores may be of other form, e.g. square, 35, Fig. 13, with marginal pieces 36, 37, or modified diamond shaped, 38, Fig. 14, with marginal pieces 39, 40. Proportions are given of a synthetic rubber composition for a hexagonal tube structure to serve as a spring element in journal box lubrications.
