Abstract

Polyolefins are produced by polymerizing an olefin at low pressure in the presence of a soluble catalyst system of an ester of an acid of a metal of the 4th to 8th sub-groups of the Periodic System including thorium and uranium on the one hand and an aluminium compound of formula Al(R)3 (in which R is hydrogen or an alkyl or aralkyl radical) on the other hand, in the presence of a finely-divided solid inert substance having an active surface in amounts of from 1 to 5 grams per kilogram of diluent. Specified olefins are ethylene and propylene; specified esters are tetramethyl, tetrapropyl and tetrabutyl titanates, dimethyldiethyl or dimethyldipropyl titanate, alkyl orthozirconates, triethyl vanadate, chromic ethylate and ferric ethylate; and specified aluminium compounds are aluminium-hydride, -triethyl, -tripropyl, -tributyl, -tripentyl, -diethylpropyl and -diethylbutyl, aluminium diethyl or dipropyl or dibutyl hydrides and the corresponding mono derivatives, aluminium tri-(2-phenyl-ethyl), aluminium tri-(2-phenyl-propyl), aluminium tri-(2-phenyl-butyl), and aluminium tri-(2,2-diphenylethyl). Specified inert substances are magnesium oxide, aluminium oxide, titanium oxide, silicates, active carbon, carbon black, iron oxide red, iron oxide brown, chrome yellow, chrome orange, cadmium sulphide and finely-divided polymers, e.g. low-pressure polyethylene. Specified diluents are isopropylcyclohexane, cyclohexane and hexane.
