Abstract

Polymers of alpha-olefines and diolefines are made by polymerizing one or more of the monomers in the presence of a polymerization catalyst which is "soluble" in the reaction medium and which has been obtained by the polymerization of an unbranched alpha-olefine containing at least six carbon atoms in the presence of an organo-aluminium compound, and a compound formed by the reaction of a tetravalent titanium compound with an organo-aluminium compound. By "soluble" is meant that the catalyst does not form a precipitate in the polymerization reaction medium. The compound formed by reducing the Ti-compound e.g. TiCl4 or TiBr4, with conventional aluminium compounds, may be heat-treated for 1 to 5 hours at 60 to 120 DEG C., after washing with inert organic media and this compound after activation with the usual organo-aluminium compound used to polymerize hexene-1, heptene-1, octene-1, nonene-1, dodecene-1, or tetradecene-1, thereby forming the desired "soluble" catalyst. This polymerization may be effected in bulk or in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent. The monomers polymerized with the soluble catalyst, may be ethylene, propylene, butene-1, 4-methyl-pentene-1, butadiene, isoprene, 1:5 hexadiene, and mixtures thereof. The copolymerization of ethylene and propylene, ethylene and butene-1, and ethylene, propylene, and isoprene are exemplified. Specifications 471,590, 794,739, 810,023 and 810,024 are referred to.
