Abstract

A sintered refractory body consists essentially, in the weight ratio, on an oxide basis, of 2 zirconia to 3 alumina to 1 of silica, the three oxides amounting to at least 95 per cent., the zirconia being present as crystalline aggregates 4-10 microns in diameter and being individually surrounded by and embedded in a network of needle-like crystals of mullite, the molar ratio of zirconia to mullite being 2 to 1. The body is prepared by heating without fusion above 1,500 DEG C. but not above 1800 DEG C. a mixture of two parts zircon to three of alumina, both as fine powders. Also present, up to 5 per cent., can be mineralizers, e.g. titania, fluorides, boric oxide, and the oxides of zinc, iron, manganese, molybdenum and cerium. The bodies may be moulded by slip casting, the slip containing a deflocculant, e.g. sodium silicate, or formed by extruding a body mass made plastic by water and, e.g. gum arabic. Cracks can be avoided when firing the cast article by including up to 20 per cent. of fired grog of similar composition. Specification 462,866 is referred to.
