Abstract

A tobacco smoke filtering element suitable for use as a cigarette filter tip comprises from 40 to 99 parts by weight of textile fibres and from 60 to 1 parts by weight of a granular hydrophilic cellulose ether, e.g. hydroxyethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose or carboxymethyl cellulose. The fibres may be of cellulose acetate and are formed as in Specification 765,961 into a basic element with which the granular substance is associated so as to be substantially uniformly dispersed therein and to partially block longitudinal smoke channels formed by the spacing of groups of the substantially longitudinally aligned and co-extensive fibres. The granular substance may be blown on to the fibres; sprayed on to them whilst they are wet with adhesive or plasticizer; or applied thereto as a cold water slurry or as a suspension in an organic solvent or plasticizer for the fibres, or electrostatically due to a frictionally &c. induced charge on the fibres. A tow of the fibres opened into a band as in Specification 765,961 may have plasticiser, e.g. di-methoxyethyl phthalate, 99 parts, and water 1 part, dispersed thereon after, before or at the same time as the granules are added. The use of methylphthalylethyl-glycollate as a plasticiser, and of fibres of viscose, cotton, nylon, polyamides and polyesters, instead of cellulose acetate, is mentioned.
