Abstract

810,433. Feeding webs. CAMERON MACHINE CO. May 13, 1957 [July 11, 1956], No. 15184/57. Class 100(1) A winding mechanism comprising a winding spindle upon which web material is wound, a driving roller coacting peripherally with wound material on the winding spindle to impart drive thereto and driving means associated with the driving roller, is characterized in that a braking roller coacts peripherally with wound material on the winding spindle to brake the wound material and winding spindle and in that the driving roller and braking roller act in opposition to each other to control the density of the wound roll. As shown, a web W of flexible material, e.g. paper, passes around rollers 12, 14, 16, 18, and 24, before being wound on a core 102 on a winding spindle 22. The rollers 12, 14, and 18 are driven through chains and sprockets by a motor 40. The roller 18 cooperates with rotary slitting knife 20 to slit the web into portions W1, W2, a driving roller 26 is driven by a motor 28 through gearing 30, 34 and a clutch 36 and braked by a hydraulic brake 38, such as a gear pump. Roller 24 is similarly driven through a clutch 36a and braked by a hydraulic brake 38a which also may be a gear pump. The spindle 22 is supported by bearings 39 slidable along uprights 45. In operation, if a loosely wound roll is required the roller 24 is driven and the roller 26 is braked to oppose the movement of web material. The clutches 36, 36a are controlled by servomotors 64, 64a respectively. The servomotors are connected by pipes 85, 85a to a two-position valve 83 leading, in the position, shown via a pipe 87 to a tank 66 and via a pipe 82 to a two-position valve 73, leading to the pump 38. A branch pipe from the pipe 87 leads to the pump 38a through the valve 73. The pipe 82 is also connected to a pipe 72 leading to a valve 74 and by-pass valve 77. When the motors 28 and 40 are started, the spindle 22 is driven by the rollers 24, 26 through a few initial turns of web W applied manuually, the clutches 36, 36a being held engaged by springs 100, 100a to effect driving of the rollers 24, 26. As the diameter of the wound roll increases, a roller 104 on a valve-actuating arm 80 is operated by a cam 78 on one of the bearings 39 to close the valve 74. A piston 86 is thereby actuated, against the. spring 100, to rock a clutch-operating lever 92 to disengage the clutch 36. The roller 26 then acts as a braking roller, since it is driven by the roll 10 of wound web and braked by pump 38, thus causing the loose winding of the outer turn 62. If a tightly wound roll is required, the roller 26 is driven and the roller 24 is braked by the pump 38a by varying the setting of the valves 83 and 73. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 not shown, the roller 26 only is arranged to be braked, e.g., by an eddy current brake. The roller 26 is driven through a clutch disengaged upon energization of a solenoid upon operation of a switch by a cam carried by one of the slidable bearings supporting the winding spindle. If desired, the path of the web around the rollers 24 and 26 may be varied to produce a tightly or loosely wound roll. For example, to produce a tightly wound roll the web is passed around the roller 26 before the roller 24, the roller 26 being braked in this instance.
