Class 143 A machine for classifying objects according to weight has a plurality of receiving stations (not shown) relative to which move weighers 1 each provided with a pan 2 the pivoted discharge door 3 of which is automatically unlatched when the pan contains an object falling within a pre-determined weight range-which corresponds with the station under the pan and is characterized in that the means for unlatching the door comprises a shaft 13 which is carried by the weigher, is rotated synchronously with the angular motion of the weigher, and is also provided with mechanism for adjusting the value of the weigher's counterweight in accordance with the discharge station beneath the pan. The weighers are moved in a circular path by a motor driven shaft 23 which, through planet gearing 29-37 and bevel gears 19, 22, drives shaft 13 at the same speed as itself. Each shaft 13 carries a toothed wheel 12 which, when the pan moves downwardly engages a plate 11 on one arm of a bell crank 10, thereby removing arm 6 from a notch in a disc 5 which is secured to the discharge door 3 concentrically with its pivoting axis 4. Also each shaft 13 carries a series of cams 14 which through push rods 15 position loose weights 17 on a bridge 18, carried by the weigh beam, in accordance with the position of the weigher. A further cam 14 also controls another spring loaded push rod (not shown) which locks the beam when the weigher is not over a receiving station. Each wheel 12 is provided with one large tooth which opens the pan in its raised position once in each cycle to discharge any underweight objects at a reject station. In a modification (not shown) the weighers are stationary and the stations move past them.
