[Class 143.] A packet, egg, &c. grading machine of the type wherein the packet &c. carriers are rotated intermittently to test the weights and discharge the packets &c. accordingly, a number of weighing beams are pivotally mounted on the rotating member, and when the rotating member is at rest, the inner end of each beam registers with a yieldable abutment constituting an auxiliary weight, or with slots or openings in a stationary disc or member co-axial with the intermittently rotated member, so that the beam can tilt against either the pressure of the yieldable abutment or by the pressure of a weight on the weighing beam. The articles are placed upon or fed to, the scale pans 20 as the scales are successively presented at the first station by a member 5 intermittently-rotated by a " Maltese Cross " motion. The inner end of each scale beam 7 carries a wheel 10 mounted on ball bearings and situated between the rotatable member 5 and a stationary disc 12. The disc is provided with apertures 13 at the second, third and fourth stations. If the article is over weight the wheel 10 rises into the aperture 13 at the second station, at the same time raising a weighted lever 16. The scale pan 20 together with its hanger 21, 23 and catch 24 descends to bring a roller 25 into alinement with a constantly-rotating cam disc 27, and the cam disc displaces the catch to permit the scale pan to tilt and discharge the article. Lighter articles failing to depress the scale pan, pass to the third station (which is not provided with a weighted lever 16) and if heavy enough to raise the wheel 10 are discharged in the manner previously described. Underweight articles are carried to the fourth station where a cam 31 raises the wheel 10, and causes the discharge as previously described. When the apparatus is to be used only for grading eggs, the scale pans 20 are dispensed with and the eggs are placed directly on the weighing beams and a yielding abutment such as the weighted lever 16, is provided at each grading position.
