Abstract

809,983. Charging sintering machines. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Feb. 5, 1957 [April 19, 1956], No. 3995/57. Class 51 (2). [Also in Group XVIII] An apparatus for compounding sinter feed comprises an endless belt 21 passing beneath the outlets of hoppers 22, 23, 24 containing ore, scale and scrap (subsequently referred to as " ore "), hoppers 27, 28, 29, 30 containing coke, anthracite, flue dust and sized returns (subsequently referred to as " additives "), and a hopper 32 which contains " hot recycle " in the form of dust or unburned sinter not suitable as a sintered product; means for continuously summating the feeding rates of " ore " and " hot recycle "; and means for varying the feeding rates of " additives " in accordance with this summation. The rates of feeders 25 on the " ore " hoppers 22-24 and feeder 33 on the " hot recycle " hopper 32 are controlled manually through devices 51 and 57 and the operator maintains a substantially constant total weight of these constituents. A summator 38 receives inputs from a scale 26 which measures the weight of " ore " on the belt, and a summator 62 which measures the weight of " hot recycle " by calculating the difference in weight registered by two scales 60, 61, and feeds its output, which is proportional to the total weight of " ore " and " hot recycle," to ratio devices 39-42 which control the quantity of " additives " fed by feeder 31 in accordance with the output of summator 38 and the manual setting of proportion controls 52-55. A further ratio device 43 receiving signals from summator 38 and a manual control 56 controls the feeding of a predetermined quantity of water to the sinter feed as it reaches a pug mill 34. Control 57 operates controller 58, which varies the speed of feeder 33 through a time delay 59 which is such that an increase in the " hot recycle " feed occurs only when the section of the belt which has received. less " ore " reaches feeder 33. Indicators 63- 67 respectively give an indication of the level of " hot recycle " in bin 32, the weight of " ore " plus " hot recycle," the weight of "hot recycle," the weight of filter cake additive measured by a scale 68 and the total weight of feed passed from the pug mill 34 over a scale 69. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the setting of the " hot recycle " feed rate automatically changes the ore feed rate. The weighing summating and ratio devices are not described but are stated to be either electronic or pneumatic devices such as those described in Specification 725,494, [Group XIX], and U.S.A. Specifications 2,520,468, 2,631,599 and 2,664,286.
