Class 73 [Also in Group XVI] Relates to machines for applying labels which carry an identification marking, such as a date stamp. The invention comprises a drum 2 which delivers labels 7 to a labelling station and a marking cylinder 15 which rotates eccentrically about an axis 16 parallel to that of the drum and at the same peripheral speed to contact the label 7 and an inking pad 35 once on each of its revolutions. Labels 7 from reciprocating stacks 8 are picked up by an intermittently rotatable box 10 and gummed along their edges. They are transferred by a member 13 to the drum 2 where they are held gummed face outwards by two suction holes 14. Bottles 3 on a conveyer 1 are spaced by a worm 4 to receive labels as they pass a presser pad 6 at the labelling station. Before reaching the labelling station each label encounters the marking cylinder 15 carried eccentrically on a disc 17 geared (Fig. 2, not shown) to rotate synchronously with the drum 2. A stem 18 carries a bank of marking discs 20 which are interpositioned laterally by studs fitting into holes in their sides and can be turned for typesetting by separating them against the force a spring 22 held with them between collars 19 and 23. The collars 19 and 23 are attached to pillar 18 by set screws 50, thus enabling the height of the marking discs 20 to be adjusted and a fine adjustment for lateral position is provided in the gear train by means of a stud and arcuate slot (Fig. 2, not shown). The ink-transfer roller 35, led from a reservoir 32 through a wiper 34 inks type 21 on the rings 20, by rotating on an axis 36 to contact, the cylinder 15 once per revolution of the disc 17. A bracket 41 carrying the disc 17 and ink roller 35 can swing on a pivot 28 (Fig. 3, not shown) against the pull of a spring 45. Detectors 44 and 46 on the conveyer react to the absence of a bottle in the regular spacing to prevent in anticipation, the corresponding label from being picked up from the stacks 8 and cause a solenoid 42 (Fig. 2, not shown) to swing the bracket 41 away from the drum 2 at the appropriate time to prevent printing action.
