Abstract

A combustible paste comprises an essentially nonaromatic liquid fuel consisting of at least 80 per cent hydrocarbons having a flash-point between 100 DEG and 260 DEG F., a specific gravity between 0.76 and 0.85, and an aniline point of at least 155 DEG F., with from 5 to 20 per cent by weight of the total composition of one or more anhydrous finely-divided pyrogenic oxides of aluminium, zirconium, titanium or silicon. The liquid fuel may contain up to 20 per cent of combustible liquids free of elements other than carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, such as ethanol, butanol, isopropanol, glycol ethyl ether, and methyl isobutyl ketone, but a fuel composed entirely of hydrocarbons is preferred. The liquid fuel should not contain more than 3 per cent of aromatic compounds, and may be a refined kerosene or alkylated paraffin. The oxides are prepared by vapour phase hydrolysis or oxidation at temperatures of 1000 DEG F. or higher, and are areogels of particle size not over 100 millimicrons. Silica is preferred but mixtures of silica with alumina, titania or zirconia may be used. Minor proportions of fillers such as diatomaceous earth, talc or clay may be included. Examples are given.
