Abstract

<PICT:0809183/III/1> The molecular structure of plastics is influenced by treating the plastic in the form of strips, sheet, or other shape to irradiation in a high vacuum in which the electron source is disposed. A high energy radiation source is used whereby the sheet is passed quickly through the radiation zone, and the gases generated are released outside said zone. It is stated that side chains of polymer structure are disrupted forming 3-dimensional cross-linkages, but at high dosages, main chains are also broken, giving a brittle glass-like product. A suitable apparatus comprises a main vacuum chamber 12 having an electron source 19, and fore- and after-vacuum chambers 13, 14. A strip of plastic 10 passes through slots 15, 18 through the vacuum locks, the slots being sealed against external air pressure. Pumps operating at 10-4mm. Hg are connected to the vacuum chambers. The electron stream is focused by an aperture 20 to pass through an accelerator 11 and then through the plastic strip which scatters the electrons, and these are collected in a retarder collector mounted below the strip and consisting of a number of chambers 1 ... 7 maintained at potentials which decrease to 4 which is at the lowest potential. A Lenard window is avoided since the radiative source and the plastic strips are in the same vacuum space, thus avoiding power losses. The plastic strip is preferably precooled before entry; the process may be applied to elastomers or polymers. Strips up to 1 metre wide may be treated at the rate of 1 metre per second.
