Abstract

Compositions comprising an intimate mixture of a polyvinyl resin, asbestos and a pigment are stabilized by 3.5 to 10.0 per cent by weight of resin of zinc salicylate or a mixture of zinc and calcium salicylates comprising up to 60 per cent by weight of calcium salicylate. Specified resins are polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride copolymers and vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymers. Specified pigments are chrome oxide green, lead chromate yellow, phthalocyanine blue and titanium dioxide. The compositions may also contain lubricants, e.g. lead stearate, calcium stearate, barium stearate, heavy metal ricinoleates, paraffin wax, carnauba wax, montan wax, mineral oils, stearic acid and lauric acid, plasticizers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, butyl benzyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, triethylene glycol esters of low molecular weight fatty acids and epoxy resins, and fillers, e.g. clay and calcium carbonate. In examples comparison is made with compositions stabilized with lead salicylate. The compositions may be used for making floor tiles.
