Abstract

Sealing compositions comprise a finely-divided vinyl chloride resin, a liquid non-volatile plasticizer therefor in amount of 2 to 10 parts by volume per part of resin, and a finely divided filler in amount of 0.5 to 1.5 parts by volume per part of said plasticizer, the filler being such that a homogenous mixture of 1 part thereof with 1.97 parts by volume of dioctyl phthalate and 0.03 parts by volume of oleic acid has a Brookfield viscosity of not more than 25,000 c.p.s. measured at 26.7 DEG C. and 60 revolutions per minute using a No. 4 spindle. The resin may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate or dialkyl maleates. The plasticizer may be a dialkyl phthalate, alkyl phthalyl alkyl glycolate, dialkyl ester of an alkane dicarboxylic acid, trialkyl or triaryl phosphate, acetyl trialkyl citrate, fatty acid ester, epoxy compound or polyester. Secondary plasticizers and extenders, e.g. oleic acid, white oil and epoxidized soya bean oil, may also be present. Specified fillers are barytes, clay, talc, asbestine, whiting, alpha floc, diatomaceous earth, indulin, carbon black, iron oxide and titanium dioxide. The compositions may also comprise stabilizers, e.g. zinc and calcium stearates; paraffin and microcrystalline waxes; wetting agents, e.g. polyethylene glycol fatty acid esters; antioxidants, e.g. N,N1-di-2-naphthyl-p-phenylene-diamine; and blowing agents, e.g. azodicarbonamide. The compositions may be applied to container closures or to closure blanks before forming, and gelled to produce sealing gaskets. Examples describe sealing compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride and (1 to 15) dioctyl phthalate, oleic acid and calcium carbonate; (16) dioctyl phthalate, oleic acid, calcium carbonate and talc; (17) dioctyl phthalate, oleic acid, asbestine and kalolin; (18) dioctyl phthalate, white oil, oleic acid, calcium carbonate, calcium oxide, carbon black, iron oxide, paraffin wax and N,N1-di-2-naphthyl-p-phenylenediamine; (19-22) dioctyl phthalate, glycol adipate, oleic acid and calcium carbonate; (23) glycol adipate, oleic acid and calcium carbonate; and (24) dioctyl phthalate, oleic acid and calcium carbonate.
