808,563. Nuclear reactors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 29, 1956 [July 29, 1955], No. 22022/55. Drawings of Specification. Class 39(4). A nuclear reactor is provided with a biological shield comprising an inner and an outer wall having one or more cavities between them and a filling of loose shielding material in the cavities retained in place in a loose state by the walls. The walls may be of thin brick or concrete or metal and the filling may be of sand, concrete, stone chips or barytes. One or more pipes or tubes may pass through the shield to provide access to the reactor. The filling may consist of a mixture of different grain sizes to increase the packing co-efficient, and a liquid such as water may be introduced into the interstices between the filling material to increase the effective density of the shield. The outer wall may be provided with openings having removable covers to allow the filling material to be emptied out.
