Abstract

808,280. Hydraulic brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. May 28, 1956 [June 1, 1955], No. 15675/55. Class 103 (1). A master cylinder for hydraulic brakes comprises a manually operated plunger 5 which on its initial movement to the right into sleeve 7, throttles the flow of liquid from inlet connection 12 in communication with a pump, not shown, the pump pressure thus reacting on the operator as " feel " and being transmitted directly to the brakes past open valve 19, conduit 18 in piston 14 and connection 3. Further movement to the right of plunger 5 closes valve 19 on its seat, so that the pressure reacts through piston 14 upon liquid to the right thereof in communication with the brakes. If the pressure pump should fail to operate, on further movement still of plunger 5 to the right, the brakes may be operated by direct mechanical thrust from plunger 5 through stem 21, valve 19 and piston 14. The passage 17 acts as a guide for the extension 16 of piston 14. A further embodiment is described having two outlet connections for pressure fluid suitable for connection to the front and rear wheels brakes of a vehicle.
