Class 100(1) In a press e.g. a cutting press, for working sheet material and fitted with gripper bars for inserting said material between the tool-bearing platens of the press and removing said material from between said platens, at least the jaws of the grippers are constituted by two thin superimposed flexible strips arranged to clamp the material between them, the clamping part of said grippers projecting beyond the profile of the bar in the direction of the material to be clamped. The strips 8, 9 of steel 1 or 2 mm. thick are fastened to the gripper bar 7 by bolts 11 and nuts 12, the bar being drilled to receive the bolts and to receive a piston 13 which passes through a hole in the strip 8 and acts on the strip 9 to open and close the gripper. When the grippers hold a sheet 1 in cutting position, the projecting clamping part of the strips 8 rests on the impression surface 6 so that a cut may be made as at 4' extending to the edge of the sheet. The bar 7 may be drilled in several places as e.g. at 14 and 15 so that the grippers may be moved to different positions on the bar to allow for varying dispositions of the cutting blades. The strip 8 may have a thicker part which fits into a transverse groove on the upper face of the bar and may terminate in a thin, flexible strip serving as one of the jaws.
