Abstract

808,240. Hull construction. ALBIACH, V. Jan. 3, 1957 [Jan. 7, 1956], No. 362/57. Class 113. In a ship's hull, suitable for shipping bulk cargo of widely-different kinds, comprising a double bottom forming ballast tanks, the tops 4 of ballast tanks on which the cargo rests are supported and stiffened by transverse beams 5 fastened to the structure of the sides 9 of the hull so as to transmit part of the weight of the cargo to the sides of the hull. Longitudinal bulkheads 10 form, together with the tank tops, a double hull, the transverse beams 5 being connected to the structure of the bulkheads so as to transmit part of the weight of the cargo thereto. Connections 7, Fig. 2, between the transverse beams 5 and the ship's bottom 1 may be replaced by pre-tensioned tie rods 38, Fig. 3. Bilge compartments 11 have sloping tops 12 defining the bottom of side cargo compartments or tanks 8 formed by the ships side, the longitudinal bulkhead, and sloping tops 16 attached-to carlings 32 at the hatch opening 33. The bottom end 39 of the bulkhead is bent towards the upright reinforcement 40 so that forces applied to the base of the bulkhead will not cause bending of its main portion. Horizontal stringers 13, 15 attached to the shell 9 and bulkheads 10 have downwardly sloping webs to facilitate loading of cargo into the compartment 8. Transmission of loads at the junction of the floor 4 with other structural members, e.g. with the sloping members 12 and the side keelsons 7 is accomplished by welding to a flanged or beaded plate 44, Fig. 8. In Fig. 6 a transverse bulkhead 34 separating hold compartments has an opening 35 closable by a panel 36 pivoted at 37 to be swingable to a horizontal portion in which it provides a 'tween-deck for freight. In Fig. 7 the opening of the transverse bulkhead 34 is closed by a panel 42 rockable about a pivot 41 to provide a hopper side wall. The bottom part of the bulkhead is shown removed to facilitate handling the cargo in the hold.
