Abstract

The invention comprises a -(4-chloro-2:3 or 2:5 dimethylphenoxy) propionic acid, its salts, esters and amides, and herbicidal compositions containing it as active constituent. The compounds may be prepared by treating a 4-chloro2:3 or 2:5 dimethyl phenol with an a -halogenated propionic acid or acid derivative in the presence of an alkaline condensing agent. a -(4-Chloro - 2:3 - dimethylphenoxy) propionic acid may also be prepared by chlorinating a -(2:3-dimethylphenoxy) propionic acid. In the examples a - (4 - chloro - 2:5 - dimethyl phenoxy) propionic acid is prepared by treating 4-chloro-2:5-dimethylphenol and (1) ethyl a -bromopropionate in the presence of potassium carbonate and acetone and hydrolysing the product; (3) a -chloropropionic acid in the presence of sodium hydroxide; (2) a -(2:3-dimethylphenoxy) propionic acid is treated with chlorine in tetrachloroethane solution at room temperature to give a -(4-chloro-2:3-dimethylphenoxy) propionic acid; (10 a -(4-chloro-2:5 dimethyl-phenoxy) propionamide is prepared by treating the acid with thionyl chloride followed by ammonia.ALSO:The invention comprises herbicidal compositions containing a -(4-chloro-2 : 3 or 2 : 5-dimethylphenoxy) propionic acid, or a salt, amide or ester thereof, and a carrier or diluent. The composition may be in the form of an aqueous solution of water-soluble salt such as an alkali metal salt or a salt of a primary, secondary or tertiary amine or an hydroxy-amine such as ethanolamine, an acid or ester together with a water-immiscible solvent such as benzene and an emulsifying agent to give an emulsion on dilution with water, an acid together with a water-miscible solvent such as acetone or alcohol and a dispersing agent to give a dispersion on dilution with water, an ester with a water-miscible solvent and an emulsifier, an ester and an emulsifier, or an acid or ester with a dispersing agent and a solid inert diluent such as kaolin. The compositions may also contain water and/or wetting agents. The compositions may also be in the form of a salt together with a wetting agent or the active compound may be mixed with a powdered solid, which may be inert or a standard agricultural fertilizer, to give a herbicidal dusting powder. In the examples a composition is prepared containing a -(4-chloro-2 : 3-dimethylphenoxy) propionic acid (5) in the form of its diethanolamine salt together with a wetting agent to give a 0.4 per cent w/v solution, (6) and kaolin together with a condensate of formaldehyde and an alkyl aryl sulphonate as dispersing agent, (7) in the form of its sodium salt together with a wetting agent, (8) and alcohol together with a dispersing agent which is a mixture of lauric diethanolamide and a polyethylene oxide-octylphenol condensate, (9) and kaolin. Similar compositions may be prepared using the 2 : 5-dimethyl compound.
