Abstract

The invention comprises the salts of alpha-(4 - chloro - 2 - methylphenoxy) - propionic acid with primary secondary or tertiary alkyl or hydroxyalkyl amines. The compounds are used in herbicidal compositions (see Group VI). They may be prepared by heating alpha-(4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)-propionic acid with an equivalent amount of a suitable amine, so as to form a homogeneous melt which on cooling gives the solid salt, which may be recrystallized, for example from ethylene dichloride. Alternatively the acid and amine may be reacted in a solvent from which the salt crystallizes on cooling. Specified amines are ethylamine, diethylamine, and mono-, di- and tri-ethanolamine. In examples the diethylamine and di- and triethanolamine salts are prepared.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise a salt of alpha - (4 - chloro - 2 - methylphenoxy) - propionic acid with a primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl or hydroxyalkyl amine (see Group IV (b)), dissolved in an aqueous medium. The compositions may be used to kill cleavers, chickweed and other weeds in cereal crops. The compositions may be prepared by dissolving the amine salts in water or by dissolving alpha-(4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)-propionic acid in an aqueous solution of the amine. A wetting agent, such as Ethylan C.P. (an ethylene oxideoctylphenol condensate), may be present in the composition. In examples herbicidal compositions containing the diethanolamine and diethylamine salts of alpha-(4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)-propionic acid are prepared.
