A cigarette package is closed by tucking in the upper end of the its front wall, folding down the triangular side flaps thus formed and then folding the upper end of its rear wall over the side flaps, a reinforcing strip of relatively rigid material provided with a closure tongue being attached to the inner or outer face of the upper end of the rear wall so that the tongue projects and is adapted to be inserted into a slit in the front wall or its tucked end, or in a reinforcement covering the front wall. The open-ended package shown in Fig. 3 is formed by folding a blank 1, Fig. 1, along lines 30, 31 and attaching a cardboard reinforcing strip 2, Fig. 2, which is folded along transverse lines 7, 8 and 9 to form panels 13, 14, 15 and 16 covering respectively the front wall 19, the bottom wall, the rear wall and the rear closure flap 21a of the package, the shaded areas of the strip being coated with thermoplastic or other adhesive. The upper edge 27 of the adhesive area coincides with the upper edge 5 of the flap 21a and is spaced a short distance from a folding line 10 which defines a tongue 18 having an arcuate edge 26 which may be inserted into an arcuate slit 11 in an area 28 of the panel 13 which is free from adhesive. The blank 1 is formed with lines of weakness 3, 4, e.g. perforations, defining an area 12 coated with thermoplastic or other adhesive. The adhesive also covers narrow marginal areas 29 outside the lines 3 and 4. After insertion of a batch of cigarettes, the front flap 19a is tucked in, thus folding the side flaps 20a along inclined lines 23, Fig. 4, and the triangular side flaps thus formed and the rear flap 21a are then folded along lines 24 and line 6 respectively, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the underside of the flap 21a adheres to the coated area of flap 19a. The tongue 18 is then folded down along the line 10 so that it adheres to the coated area of the front wall 19 and covers the slit 11, as shown in Fig. 6, and is finally secured by a sealing strip on stamp B. To open the package, the seal is broken and the tongue pulled upwardly to tear the wall 19 and flap 19a along the lines 3, 4, thus removing a strip C, Fig. 7, to leave an aperture through which the cigarettes may be removed. The package may then be reclosed by inserting the tongue 18 into the slit 11. In modifications, the strip 2 is attached to the inside of the package, the slit 11 is formed in the wall 19 or at its upper edge, the strip consists merely of the panels 15, 16 and 18 or is in two parts with the panel 14 omitted, or the blank 1 is formed with an aperture corresponding to the area 12 so that no strip C is required to be removed.
