Abstract
808,032. Ordnance. MANUFACTURE DE MACHINES DU HAUT-RHIN S.A. Nov. 9, 1956 [Nov. 10, 1955 and March 9, 1956], No. 34284/56. Classes 9(1) and 92 The inner tube of a gun is provided with conventional twisted grooves 18, Fig. 2, and with supplemental grooves 20 extending parallel to the axis of the tube or with a slight pitch in a direction opposed to the twist of the conventional grooves. If the grooves 20 are given a slight pitch, this may be in the order of 1 degree while the pitch of the conventional grooves may vary from 7-15 degrees. The depth of the grooves 20 is equal to or slightly smaller than that of the grooves 18. The gun is used with a missile made of inner and outer sections 1, 11, Fig. 1, the outer section 11 having driving bands 13, 14 co-operating with the grooves 18 to rotate the missile during flight while the inner section is revolubly carried in the outer section 11 by means of needle bearings 12 and has guiding members 5 slidably engaging the supplemental grooves 20. The inner section 1 encloses the shaped charge 2 with its cover 3 and is fitted with a cap 4 carrying blades or fins 5 and an electrically ignitable fuze 6 connected with the igniting system 8 which controls a relay 9 so as to produce deflagration of the charge 2. A spring 16 is interposed between the sections and urges forwardly the inner section 1 by means of a piston 17. The missile may f6rm part of a cartridge. The grooves 20 intersect the lands 19 at different points but the arrangement of the driving bands 13, 14 is such that any forward leaking of the propelling gases at the moment of firing is prevented. The relative rotary motion of the inner and outer sections of the missile may be used for releasing the safety system associated with the ignition means at a predetermined point of the path of the missile or where the inner section 1 is stabilized by means of fins it can be used to urge them outwardly in a uniform manner when the missile passes out of the gun.
