An inductive load 14 supplied with unidirectional current from an A.C. supply 10 through a thyratron 18 has connected across it a rectifier 26 and resistor 42. Rectifier 26 allows the passage of a load-sustaining current during the half cycles when the thyratron 18 is non- conducting, and the resistor 42 by sustaining a reverse voltage 47 during such half-cycles allows the application of a higher forward load voltage for the same average load voltage. The load current then responds more quickly to changes in supply voltage. The optimum value of resistor 42 is two and a half times the ohmic resistance of load 14.
