Abstract

Polyolefines of molecular weight between 40,000 and 120,000 are extruded through a multitude die to form a multiple filament strand, and the filaments are immediately subjected to a transverse flow of an inert gaseous cooling medium so that the medium strikes all the hot filaments at the same distance from the die while not forcing them to cohere; the strand is then quenched at from 55 DEG to 5 DEG C. below the melting point while stretching the filaments up to ten times their original length. The polyolefine may be polyethylene, the cooling medium may be air, and the quenching medium may be boiling water. The distance between <PICT:0807248/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0807248/IV (a)/2> the die and the transverse flow of cooling medium may be between 0.25 and 5 inches, and individual filament diameters of the multiple filament strand may finally be less than 12 mils. In Fig. 2, filaments are extruded from melt-spinning apparatus 11 and subjected to a stream of cooling medium from nozzle 13, shown in plan view in Fig. 3 After cooling, the strand is quenched in a hot liquid bath 15, passes around rollers 18 and 20 and is stretched by rollers 25, 26, 28, 29 prior to wind-up at 31. The first pair of stretch rollers 25, 26 may be submerged in a second quenching bath, as shown. Strands prepared in this way are said to be substantially free from interfilament bonding while the filements, on being oriented by stretching, become curly or wavy. Specification 804,054 is referred to.
