Abstract

806,901. Signalling over power circuits. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. June 18, 1957 [June 18, 1956], No. 18827/56. Class 40 (4). In a carrier system for communicating to and between electric traction vehicles each of which is supplied with operating current via a sheathed insulated cable 5 leading from a contact 4 on a trolley arm 3 on the vehicle 2 which contact 4 connects with an overhead power transmission line 1, the capacitance present between the sheath 7 and the conductor 8 of the cable 5 is employed as a coupling capacitor to convey the modulated carrier signals between the transmission line 1 and communication equipment 6 in the vehicle. As shown, the equipment 6 is connected to the primary winding of transformer 9, the secondary 10 of which is connected between the sheath 7 and ground. A non-linear resistor 12, preferably made of the material sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Metrosil," is connected between the sheath 7 and ground in parallel with the secondary 10. In the event of the cable insulation breaking down the non-linear resistor will become of low impedance and will provide an effective short-circuit to ground.
